1. Start Dictate in Microsoft Word for Mac
Open a new or existing Word document, sign in to Microsoft 365, choose Home → Dictate, and wait for the Dictate control to show that it is listening. Start speaking and watch the text appear at the insertion point.
Microsoft’s current support page applies to Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac and lists several perpetual Word versions, but its Dictate troubleshooting still says an active Microsoft 365 subscription is required. If the button is missing, verify the signed-in license before changing microphone settings.
- Open the document and place the insertion point.
- Confirm Word is signed in to the licensed Microsoft 365 account.
- Choose Home → Dictate.
- Wait for listening to start before speaking.
2. Treat Word Dictate as a connected feature
Microsoft describes Word Dictate as speech-to-text that needs a reliable internet connection. It does not document the Word workflow as guaranteed on-device recognition.
Open Home → Dictate → Dictation Settings to review the available speech controls. Microsoft’s account-data guidance identifies that menu as the place to manage Speech settings in Microsoft 365 for Mac.
3. Use Word’s punctuation and Dictation Settings
Microsoft documents spoken punctuation and a settings menu for language, microphone and automatic punctuation. Available commands and languages can change, so use the command help exposed by the current Word build rather than memorizing an undated third-party list.
Word’s Dictate feature inserts text into the active document. It is not the same as Microsoft 365 Copilot voice chat, Read Aloud, or macOS Voice Control; those features have different purposes and data paths.
4. Fix a missing Dictate button
First confirm that Word is signed in with an active Microsoft 365 subscription and that the Mac has a reliable internet connection. Then update Word and reopen the document.
If the button exists in Word for the web but not the Mac app, or the reverse, troubleshoot those surfaces separately. The desktop app uses macOS app permissions; Word for the web also depends on the browser’s site-level microphone permission.
- Verify the Microsoft 365 account and subscription.
- Confirm the Mac is online.
- Update Word and restart the app.
- Compare the desktop app with Word for the web only to isolate the failing surface.
5. Fix “Dictation can’t hear you” on a Mac
Check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and allow Microsoft Word. Then open System Settings → Sound → Input, select the intended microphone, and confirm its input level moves when you speak.
Microsoft also recommends checking that the microphone is connected and not muted, moving to a quieter location, adjusting its input level, and testing an external microphone. For Word on the web, allow microphone access in the browser and for the current Microsoft 365 site.
6. Choose Apple Dictation or IraVoice only for a different constraint
Use Word Dictate when you want Word’s own connected speech feature and its document-focused controls. Use Apple Dictation when the built-in Mac option is enough across supported text fields.
IraVoice 0.7.1 is the distinct option for macOS 26+ Apple-silicon Macs when speech recognition should run on the Mac, one held-key workflow should extend beyond Word, or a spoken technical request should become reviewable Markdown. It does not repair Word Dictate or remove Microsoft’s account requirements.
