For many people, the best starting point is Apple Dictation because it is included with macOS. A dedicated app is better only when you can name the missing capability: local held-key processing, cross-platform access, file transcription, a custom vocabulary, team controls, or a structured developer workflow.

Try Apple Dictation first for built-in text entry. On macOS 26 and Apple silicon, Megaphone is the strongest reviewed permanent-free finished open-source app for local dictation, cleanup, Dictionary learning, app context, and macros. Google AI Edge Eloquent adds local file transcription and Voice Edit. Voice Control remains Apple’s separate free accessibility system for spoken navigation and editing.

Offline speech processing removes the live audio upload from that stage, but it does not describe the whole product. Check model downloads, formatting, license activation, optional cloud features, telemetry, history, and the destination app before making a privacy decision.

Dictation turns speech you are saying now into text for a focused field or document. File and meeting transcription converts saved or longer-form audio into a transcript, often with exports, timestamps, or speaker tools. Some products do both; IraVoice is a dictation app, not a meeting or imported-file transcriber.
