1. Enable Apple Dictation
Open System Settings, choose Keyboard, scroll to Dictation, and turn it on. Choose the language and keyboard shortcut you want to use.
Apple notes that Dictation availability and features vary by language and region. The settings panel is the authoritative view for the Mac in front of you.
- Open System Settings → Keyboard.
- Turn Dictation on and confirm the language.
- Choose a shortcut you will not trigger accidentally.
2. Dictate into the field you are already using
Place the insertion point in a supported text field, trigger Dictation with the microphone key or your chosen shortcut, and speak. Review the result before sending or publishing it.
Apple distinguishes Dictation from Voice Control: Dictation enters text, while Voice Control is designed to operate the Mac with spoken commands.
3. Separate live dictation from audio transcription
Speech to text describes the result, but the input workflow matters. Apple Dictation listens live and places text at the insertion point. Voice Control combines dictation with spoken navigation and editing. File transcription begins with a saved recording and produces a separate transcript.
Do not choose a live dictation app when the real job is transcribing interviews, meetings, podcasts, voice memos, or uploaded media. IraVoice is a held-key text-input app; it does not record meetings or transcribe saved audio files.
- Live dictation: speak now and insert editable text at the cursor.
- Voice Control: dictate while also navigating and operating the Mac.
- File transcription: convert an existing audio or video recording into text.
4. Check the processing disclosure on your Mac
Do not assume every Mac, language, and setting behaves the same way. Apple explicitly tells users to inspect the text beneath Keyboard → Dictation to see whether general voice inputs and transcripts are processed on-device for that configuration.

5. Add a dedicated app only for a specific gap
A third-party app earns its place when you need a different processing architecture, a global held-key habit, filler cleanup, or output shaped for another tool.
