Claude Desktop voice input on Windows and Linux

Claude on Windows and Linux: voice mode, in-session dictation, and the gaps

Claude’s voice features started on the Mac and on phones, and the Windows and Linux desktop apps have only part of that set. As of October 2026, Claude Desktop for Windows has voice mode and dictation inside Cowork and Claude Code sessions, but not the Caps Lock Quick Entry dictation Mac users get, and the Linux beta has no dictation at all. Here is what each system offers, what Anthropic says about it, and how to fill the gaps.

Source-reviewed

1. Claude Desktop on Windows and Linux in October 2026

Anthropic lists Claude Desktop for macOS, Windows and Linux (beta). Windows needs Windows 10 or later; the Linux beta needs Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later or Debian 12 or later, on x64 or arm64. Chat works on every plan, while Claude Code and Cowork in the desktop app need Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. On Windows, Cowork also needs administrator rights at install time and the Virtual Machine Platform feature; Anthropic says users without admin access can install Claude but won’t get Cowork on the desktop.

On Linux, install from Anthropic’s apt repository so updates arrive with sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade; the app does not update itself. Anthropic lists three current limitations of the Linux build: computer use isn’t available, dictation isn’t available, and the Quick Entry global hotkey works on X11 but on native Wayland depends on your desktop’s GlobalShortcuts portal.

  • Windows: voice mode, plus dictation in Cowork and Claude Code sessions.
  • Windows: no Quick Entry, so no Caps Lock dictation.
  • Linux beta: no dictation; Claude Code’s docs point to CLI voice dictation instead.

2. Claude voice mode on a Windows PC: setup, languages and limits

Voice mode is a beta feature on every plan, available in Claude Desktop, on the web and in the mobile apps, though Anthropic says it is built to work best from a phone. In a new chat, select the sound-wave symbol in the lower right of the chat window and start talking; your prompt fills the input, Claude answers aloud, and voice mode stays on until you select Stop. You can switch between typing and talking in the same conversation without losing context, which helps when you need to type a URL or a snippet of code.

Hands-free mode is the default: Claude listens continuously and replies at natural pauses. In a noisy room, switch to push-to-talk and hold the button while you speak. Choose a voice under Settings > General > Voice settings, and set the language you speak under Settings > General > Voice > Language; changing the app’s display language does not change it, and languages other than English are in beta.

Voice conversations count toward your plan’s usage limits, and their text transcripts are saved in your chat history like any other chat. When voice mode cuts out, Anthropic’s troubleshooting points to a stable internet connection, microphone permission for Claude, and your usage limits. Enterprise owners who want voice mode off for the organization have to contact Anthropic Support.

3. Dictation in Cowork and Claude Code, and why Quick Entry is missing

Anthropic separates the two features plainly: dictation converts your speech to text so you can type prompts by speaking, while voice mode is a two-way conversation. Its voice mode FAQ adds that in Claude Cowork and Claude Code, dictation is available but voice mode isn’t. Anthropic doesn’t describe the Windows control itself, but a June 2026 report on its GitHub tracker, filed from Windows 11, describes a microphone button in the input box of a Cowork session.

The same report is a useful warning. Its author found that dictation in a Cowork session transcribed correctly the first time, then captured audio without producing text on every later try until a new session was started. The issue was closed as a duplicate of an older report. It is one user’s account, not an Anthropic statement, but if you see the same pattern, a fresh session or a different input method is the practical workaround.

What Windows does not get is Quick Entry. Anthropic’s Quick Entry article answers the question directly: it is currently only available for macOS, and Windows users get Claude Desktop without it. So there is no double-tap overlay and no Caps Lock dictation shortcut on a PC. Anthropic also does not say where desktop dictation audio is processed; for the Mac feature it says only that the transcribed text is sent to Claude as part of your message.

4. Claude Code /voice in PowerShell, WSL and Linux terminals

If your Claude work happens in a terminal, Claude Code has its own dictation. Run /voice, hold Space to record, and release to insert the transcript, which then waits for Enter unless you turn on autoSubmit. /voice tap switches to tap mode, where a second tap stops recording and submits the prompt when it is at least three words long. Anthropic says the audio streams to its servers for transcription and is not processed locally, that the feature needs a Claude.ai login rather than an API key, Amazon Bedrock or another cloud provider, and that it does not work in SSH or cloud sessions. Transcription does not count toward your Claude usage limits.

On Windows, turn on microphone access for desktop apps if /voice reports that access is denied. Inside WSL you need WSLg, which comes with WSL2 from the Microsoft Store; on WSL1, run Claude Code in native Windows. On Linux, Claude Code records with a built-in native module and falls back to arecord or SoX’s rec; if neither is present, /voice prints an install command. Anthropic’s Linux desktop page recommends this CLI dictation because the desktop app lacks it.

5. Win+H and Voice access in the Claude message box

Windows voice typing works wherever the Claude input has the cursor, in the desktop app or on claude.ai. Press Windows key+H, wait for Listening…, and speak. It is the quickest free stand-in for the missing Quick Entry, but Microsoft says it relies on online Azure Speech recognition and needs an internet connection. Say “Press Enter” only when you want the message sent, because voice typing treats that as a command.

Voice access, in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, is the built-in route that works without internet. It also controls the PC by voice, so say “Dictation mode” before dictating a long prompt, and use “Add to vocabulary” for product names and jargon your prompts contain. Alt+Shift+B wakes it or puts it to sleep, and some languages need a speech pack download before first use.

If Claude’s microphone, voice typing or Voice access hears nothing, check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Microsoft says Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone must be on, and apps that don’t appear in the list are governed by Let desktop apps access your microphone.

6. IraVoice in Claude Desktop on Windows, with code names, and in the Linux beta

Use voice mode when you want Claude to talk back, and the built-in dictation where Anthropic offers it. IraVoice covers what those don’t: speech recognized on your computer, in any Claude box, with the key you already use in other apps. IraVoice 1.2.2 runs on macOS 13+ on Apple silicon, Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), and Linux (beta) and recognizes speech with NVIDIA Parakeet; after the one-time download of the Parakeet Unified EN model (about 700 MB), it works offline.

On Windows, hold Right Ctrl with the cursor in a Claude chat, Cowork or Code input, speak, and release; the text is pasted with Ctrl+V and your clipboard is restored. The Claude desktop app is on IraVoice’s list of recognized apps on Windows, so when Claude is working in a Git project IraVoice spells that project’s names the way the code does: “get user by ID” becomes getUserById and “pipeline dot swift” becomes Pipeline.swift. It keeps only file, folder and identifier names, never source text, skips secrets and dependency folders, and sends nothing off the computer.

In Claude Desktop’s Linux beta, or claude.ai in a Linux browser, IraVoice dictates with Ctrl+Space and types through a helper such as xdotool, ydotool or wtype. There are no code names on Linux, because the beta cannot detect the focused app. IraVoice ships as a .deb for Ubuntu 22.04 or later and other Debian-based systems, the same family Anthropic supports for Claude Desktop on Linux. On Wayland, bind iravoice --toggle-transcription to a desktop shortcut if the key doesn’t reach the app.

IraVoice does not press Enter by default, does not start voice mode, and has no access to your Claude account; once you send a prompt, Anthropic’s terms apply to it. IraVoice Local costs $79 once for one computer, $109 for two, or $149 for three, and the 3-day free trial needs no email or card.

Questions

What readers usually ask next.

Does Claude Desktop have voice input on Windows?

Yes, in two forms. Voice mode, a spoken back-and-forth, starts from the sound-wave button in a chat, and Anthropic says dictation is available in Cowork and Claude Code sessions. The Mac’s Caps Lock Quick Entry dictation is not offered on Windows.

Is there a Caps Lock dictation shortcut for Claude on Windows?

No. Anthropic says Quick Entry, which carries the Caps Lock voice shortcut, is only available on macOS. Windows key+H voice typing or a dictation app with its own key are the closest keyboard-driven options.

Can I use voice with Claude on Linux?

Claude Desktop’s Linux beta lists dictation as unavailable. Claude Code’s /voice works in a Linux terminal, and a Linux dictation app can type into Claude Desktop or claude.ai.

Where is Claude voice audio processed?

Claude Code’s documentation says /voice streams audio to Anthropic’s servers. For voice mode, Anthropic says transcripts are saved in your chat history and recommends a stable internet connection; it does not describe on-device processing for either.

Why does dictation in Claude Desktop stop after the first use?

A Windows 11 user reported in June 2026 that Cowork dictation worked once per session and then produced no text; the issue was closed as a duplicate of an older report. Starting a new session or using another input method is the practical workaround.

Does IraVoice work in the Claude app on Windows?

Yes. It types at the cursor in the Claude input and, because the Claude app is on its recognized list on Windows, spells code names from the Git project Claude is working in. It does not press Enter by default.
