## Native voice context

- Apple Dictation is the recommended first step for basic Mac voice typing. Apple tells users to check Keyboard → Dictation for the processing disclosure that applies to their configuration.
- Apple lets users configure multiple Dictation languages and switch from the language control beside the cursor or the Globe key. Base Dictation, on-device and modeless Dictation, auto-punctuation, and dictated emoji have separate availability tables.
- IraVoice currently exposes nine English regional speech choices; it is not presented as a broad multilingual alternative.
- Google Docs Voice typing works in current Chrome, Edge and Safari. Google says the browser controls its speech-to-text service and sends the resulting text to Docs or Slides.
- Microsoft Word for Mac has native Dictate under Home. Microsoft documents Microsoft 365 sign-in, an active subscription, a microphone, and a reliable internet connection; it does not describe this path as guaranteed on-device recognition.
- Apple Mail and desktop Gmail can use the configured macOS Dictation text-input path in supported message fields. Google documents its Tools → Voice typing menu for Docs and Slides, not as a Gmail compose feature.
- Outlook for Mac has a separate Message → Dictate control and Option-F1 shortcut. Microsoft documents a Microsoft 365 subscription, sign-in, microphone, and reliable internet connection for that path.
- Email dictation should end with visible review of recipients, names, dates, amounts, links, attachments, confidential details, and the final Send action.
- Claude Code has native voice dictation through `/voice`. Anthropic says recorded audio is streamed to its servers for transcription and requires Claude.ai authentication.
- Current ChatGPT desktop builds can use Voice with Codex for live discussion and task coordination. IraVoice is not a live Codex voice mode.
- VS Code has native editor dictation and voice chat through Microsoft’s VS Code Speech extension. Microsoft documents local speech recognition.
- Cursor has native batch speech-to-text input. Its voice changelog does not identify the voice-specific processing or retention path, so users should inspect Cursor’s current Data Use controls.
- IraVoice is relevant when a supported Apple-silicon Mac user wants local speech recognition, reusable dictated text across apps, or a guarded Markdown brief delivered to the focused app or explicitly handed to an agent.

## Comparison boundaries

- Apple Dictation is included with supported macOS versions. Apple documents that processing can be on-device or on Apple servers depending on settings and language.
- Wispr Flow says transcription happens in its cloud. Its Privacy Mode documentation describes a zero-retention configuration.
- Superwhisper and IraVoice both describe local speech processing; IraVoice does not claim to be more private than Superwhisper.
- MacWhisper is the broader choice for file, meeting, media, subtitle, and multi-format transcription workflows.
- Typeless and Aqua Voice document cloud speech processing with retention controls; zero retention is not the same as local processing.
- VoiceInk supports local models and optional user-configured cloud providers; the active mode determines its data path.
